The Sword Is Mightier Than The Pen

On the eve of the publication of my book Life Between Meals: The Truth About Losing Weight From People Who Know, it is humbling to consider what a tiny percentage of our population is moved by the printed word. I'll give you an example. In the bathroom of my office above the pass-through box a very large sign reads, "PUT URINE SAMPLES HERE". McDonald's Bait and Switch

During the span of time from August 2002 to August 2004 when the media was telling the truth about nutrition, the McDonald's company grabbed a public relations advantage by announcing they were changing their cooking oil to a form with less trans fatty acids. Trans fatty acids or TFAs cause heart disease. In fact, quietly, McDonald's never changed the oil used to cook their french fries and hash browns, and with the abandonment of obesity by the media, there has been no pressure on McDonald's to follow through with their promise. The New Government Food Pyramid

Ha, ha, ha. Life is fun, isn't it? Yesterday Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns presented the new USDA food pyramid. Confronted by competing commercial interests and unwilling to view actual evidence or think for themselves, the USDA produced a compromise pyramid with vertical stripes that does not clearly show which food groups should be consumed in which quantities. The Cherry Blossoms

On Saturday my wife and I went to see the cherry trees along the tidal basin in downtown Washington DC. The blossoms were especially gorgeous this year. I was happy to see such a small crowd perambulating among the trees, but my pleasure turned to disgust when I saw the vast sea of people, across the mall, waiting in long lines for hot dogs and tacos. Many people have asked why I won't see the movie Supersize Me. One of my hobbies is writing stage and screen plays. Why haven't I written a play about obese people, since I know so much about them. More...
