Skin Tags

One of the best ways to motivate patients to correct a lifestyle issue is to show them the visible evidence on their body of the harmful effects of overeating. Show people the whole-body MRI scan of the 240 lb woman in National Geographic and point out that the lethal fat is the fat around the intestine, not the skin fat, butt fat, breast fat or any fat reachable with liposuction. I point to the patient's belly and point out that they look like they swallowed a basketball (if indeed they look like that) (I don't lie). From then on, whenever they see themselves in a mirror, they remember the basketball. The comment is delivered in a medical context, saying nothing about appearance or self-worth--an important point of technique. More...

Why Do You Weigh Less in the Morning Than at Night?

My patients are supposed to weigh themselves every morning, naked and empty, but some of them weigh themselves in the evening as well and discover that they weigh more at night than they do in the morning. Some have asked me why. There are many reasons. The obvious reason is that during the night they burn about 800 calories, depending on their size, without a corresponding intake of food-calories.
