Abdominal Girth Versus Waist Circumference

I learned something from Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz, authors of the new (yet another) diet book You: On A Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management speaking on NPR radio. They mentioned that the abdominal girth should be LESS THAN HALF the patient's height. It's true because the metabolic damage from obesity comes from overabundant mesenteric fat, not from skin or hip fat. I like the idea of having patients measure their AG, in addition to following their weight. I am replacing the body fat measurement with the girth measurement. More...

The Broad Approach

I caught flak for the previous messages dealing with American excessive consumption, unrealistic expectations, borrowing, and failure to save money. What did they have to do with obesity people asked. I answered it is fair game for physicians to deal with the broader issues of life, because if the physician doesn't, any weight lost in the diet will be regained. More...
