Patients often ask about alcohol. When alcohol arrives in the body if the insulin level is low, the alcohol is burned to carbon dioxide. On the other hand when alcohol finds the insulin high, the alcohol is stored as fat. So alcohol makes fat people gain weight, but does not make skinny people gain. It’s not fair I know, but fairness is a human ideal, not a divine one.

People ask what form of alcohol is the most fattening. That would be cocktails because they are sugary and raise insulin. Second would be beer because people drink so much of it when they drink. Last would be wine because people drink less of it when they drink.

Have you heard of the William the Conqueror Diet? William, king of Normandie, and his knights crossed the English Channel in 1066 and conquered Britain. In his later years William got very fat, so fat indeed that no horse could carry him. To reduce his weight, William declared that in the future he would eat no food–he would only drink wine. The diet worked . He was leaner by the time his liver gave out.
