  • Carbs And Obesity Reduce Height

One hundred years ago the Dutch were 2" shorter than the Americans. Now they are 2" taller. Indeed, west Europeans in general are taller than Americans. The NPR story today correctly identified our crappy health care system as one of the causes, and the fact that a few American children don’t get enough to eat, but the story completely missed the most important cause–the new American emphasis on carbs.

It used to be that bread and pasta were the foods of last resort. Now they are the foods of first choice for Americans. And American kids drink soda instead of milk. Other countries, Pakistan, Nigeria, do this because they have to; we do it because we are stupid. And STRESSED. Stressed, overworked people select sugar and starch, over proteins, and things they can grab or make quickly.

The NPR story firmly linked height to brain development and financial/social success. Remember, we are talking about averages for a population. Our carb-based diet leads to obesity and diabetes. Ambient levels of insulin are constantly high. Lack of calcium and vitamin-D are a factor. Obese girls, going through puberty at an earlier age, wind up shorter. As I wrote in an earlier MOW, fat tissue/aromatase converts progesterone and adrenal steroids into estrogen, leading to premature puberty.
