  • Baked Chicken People

A couple of messages ago I talked about a group of patients that uniformly fails to lose weight--men who don't stop talking. Now I'll give you another group that uniformly fails--baked-chicken-people. Baked-chicken-people are a subset of the people who say, "Doctor, I don't understand how I could be so heavy. I eat right." Most of these people still go on to do well in my program, but the baked-chicken people INSIST I listen to the full list of what (they say) they eat each day. The list always has yogurt in the morning and baked chicken without skin for dinner. Baked-chicken people never lose weight.

Please don't confuse baked-chicken-people with the following: (1) People who actually eat baked chicken or (2) people genuinely confused about how much they eat. Intelligent, honest Americans can easily be confused, because in this Jack-climb-the-beanstalk U.S. world where every dish, car and house is too big, one can easily lose sight of what a normal portion should be. For the genuinely confused, I do the following. Gently, I ask them what weight they want to be. I have them multiply that number by 10. (For men, I add 10%) Then I tell the patient, THAT is the amount of calories they ought to eat each day. (BTW it's interesting how many Americans have trouble multiplying a number by 10) Next I give them a box of nutritional information brochures from local restaurants, quietly watching which ones they select. (Use all the information patients give you. Be Sherlock Holmes.) NON-baked-chickeners are interested in the exercise and surprised to see how quickly their favorite dishes mount up over the required calorie count. Baked-chickeners don't care. They are looking for justification, not help.
